An antique rug is a wonderful way to add a splash of character to any room. Since it will probably be quite old, you might prefer to hang it on your wall rather than placing it on the floor. Whatever you choose, there are a few special things to take into consideration when dealing with an antique rug. When choosing an antique rug, be sure to inspect it carefully. Look for any rips, tears or frays that might be expensive to fix. Also, try to choose a rug that doesn’t appear to have colors bleeding into one another. This could cause a serious problem when you decide to wash it! Speaking of which, you should wash your rug as soon as you get home. You can either hand wash it in mild detergent and tepid water, or you can consult your drycleaner for your best options. While antique rugs do make a wonderful addition to any home, they are harder to take care of than traditional antiques. The nature of textiles is to disintegrate, so it is in your best interest to find a spray or treatment that will ensure the life of your antique rug. Do this by talking to a textile expert, your drycleaner or an antiques dealer.
